Porcelain demitasse cup and saucer decorated with Egyptian-style motifs from the "service of the Khedive, " commissioned by the viceroy of Egypt in 1873 to Ginori of Florence. Khedive -- the title of the viceroy of Egypt under Turkish rule 18671914. You will find some pieces like these in museums, and quite rare in circulation. Will brighten up anyone or any collection of cups -- what a beauty!

Interesting bit of history go with this rare antique beauty. The Napoleonic Wars forced closure for many Italian businesses and saw Tuscany annexed by Napoleon's Empire. Despite this, the Ginori factory continued production, diplomatically adopting a new "Empire" theme for its wares. A new Italian monarchy was established in 1861 and under Royal patronage, Ginori was commissioned to produce many works of art and splendid table services. To allow for expansion the company decided, in 1896, to join forces with Giulio Richard's Milanese factory, hence today's name, Richard- Ginori. The factory is now owned by Gucci. Dimensions: Approximately saucer 4.15" in diameter and cup is 2.15" across and 2.25 at highest point. Please see photos and message me if you would like additional photos or more information. KOVELS GUIDE Pottery & Porcelain Marks Crown: Marks showing crowns have been used since the early 18th century and are still in use today. While some marks are the basic design of a curved line on the bottom with lines jutting out toward the top, most marks are crowns with elaborate details. Capo-di-Monte factory in Naples, Italy, used a mark of a crown over the letter N. The mark was used from 1771 to 1821 and was originally hand-painted over or under the glaze. Companies both in and outside Italy have used the mark ever since.
