Shelley Art Deco OVERLAPPING J 11783 Vogue shape demitasse/coffee cup & saucer
An extremely rare Shelley Art Deco "OVERLAPPING J" pattern No 11783 Vogue shape demitasse/coffee cup & saucer. N ever seen one come up for sale before, a very scarce and hard to find pattern. Pattern No 11783 Overlapping J - Blue and silver bands with coral & black stylised flowers over-lapping silver stylised J. Entered into the pattern book during 1930. This pattern was produced on the Vogue shape sets.
Designed by Eric Slater this iconic shape was first introduced in 1930. Please note that although this is a Vogue pattern all coffee sets (as in this case) have Mode shape cups. Dimensions: demitasse/coffee cup base diameter 41mm (1.6 inches) / diameter across top of cup 73mm (2.9 inches) / height of cup 62mm (2.4 inches) / diameter of saucer 120mm (4.75 inches). Condition: The exterior base of the cup has some very faint light crazing which is very difficult to see. The interior base (see photo) has what appears to be the faintest light stress line which runs part the way around the well of the cup.
This doesn't go through to the exterior and is difficult to see with the naked eye. Some light rubbing to the blue on the cup handle otherwise all other paintwork/enamelling is in very good order with no fading to the pattern.
The cup has a good true sound to it when lightly tapped. Saucer has some extremely faint light micro crazing which can only just about be seen using a strong eye glass. As a result it has a dull sound to it when lightly tapped.Both pieces are otherwise in very good clean condition with no other cracks, chips or signs of wear.
