Exquisite Decorative Set of 3 DEMITASSE CUPS & SAUCERS. This discontinued pattern is particularly striking with a bold gold band at the rim of both the cups and saucers and on the cups' handle.

The hand painted floral sprays are beautiful. The background color for these is a light cream color.

Study the photos to fully appreciate these antiques! CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold or the paint.

DIMENSIONS: The flat cups have a diameter of 2" with a height of 2 1/8" and a capacity of 2 ounces. The demitasse saucers have a diameter of 4 5/8" and height of 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Walter Scott Lenox and Jonathan Coxon founded the Ceramic Art Company (CAC) of Trenton, New Jersey in 1889. They worked together until 1896 when Lenox bought out Coxton and the name Lenox was added beneath the existing CAC mark. In February of 1906, the company changed its name to Lenox, Inc and today remains a premier producer of quality china.

It was organized as an art studio, rather than a factory, offering unique artware, porcelain, and pottery instead of a full line of ceramics and complete dinnerware sets. It was an early producer of American Belleek porcelain beginning with just 18 employees in 1889 and growing to 44 employees by 1901. The company struggled until it received a large order from Shreve and Company, a retailer, in 1906.

As bad luck would have it, the retailer was destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake with 1 item surviving--a Lenox single glazed bone china plate. Lenox continues some manufacture of bone china dinnerware at its plant in Kinston, North Carolina. Paul Leichtnam has managed the Kinston plant since it opened in 1989 and through three changes in corporate ownership. Lenox emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009 under its current owner, Clarion Capital Partners LLC, a New York equity firm.
