Royal Albert OLD ENGLISH ROSE MATTE BLACK Colorway DEMI-TASSE CUP & SAUCER
The timeless OLD ENGLISH ROSE pattern but on a dramatic black background. Even rarer, this is a matte black finish - I have never seen a similar set before - normally the colored backgrounds have a gloss glaze.
This set dates from 1935-40 based on backstamp information found on the Royal Albert website. Note that the handle is completely gilded and the interior edges are also heavily gilded - again confirming that this is an early set. In virtually mint condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or other damage or restoration - both pieces "ping" true. Pattern is crisp and bright and no wear to gold gilding noted. The matte black background is also in perfect condition - there are no spots or pinpricks of missing color which one usually finds on dark backgrounds.
Cup is 2 1/4" tall and 2 3/8" to top of handle at sides and is 3 7/8" across including handle; saucer is 4 7/8" across. Marked as shown in photo with Royal Albert Crown China mark in with pattern name. And rare to find the pattern number 9927 handpainted in dark pink (I have never seen this before). Please ignore all white spots on all photos caused by camera flash.
