For over two centuries, Royal Copenhagen's Flora Danica has remained one of the worlds most prestigious and luxurious porcelain collections. This botanical work comprises 51 volumes and 3,060 colored copper prints depicting, in minute detail, the plants of Denmark.
Beginning in the late 18th century and continuing today, the most skilled painters at Royal Copenhagen have transcribed these botanical details to a fine porcelain canvas in order to create the Flora Danica collection. King Christian VII of Denmark commissioned the first Flora Danica dinner service as a gift for Empress Catherine II of Russia in 1790. Each piece of Flora Danica since has been made to order.
The cup has a lovely branch-like handle, and carries a depiction of the'Medicago minima Lam. The cup has a 2 1/2 inch diameter, and is 2 3/16 inches tall. On the back of the cup is the painter's meticulous latin script, along with the Royal Copenhagen markings and the signatures of the painter and gilder. The cup appears flawless, with no apparent damage or signs of use.
4 11/16 inch diameter, and has no chips or cracks. There is a scratch on the inner ring of gilt, near where the cup rests.
Otherwise the saucer appears in mint condition. This set is a work of art.
